Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden and Suffolk County Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins, prominent voices adding to a growing chorus of public safety support, have each endorsed At-Large City Councilor Erin Murphy for a second term, citing her record of working for safer streets and an improved criminal justice system.

Hayden, who won election to the county’s top prosecutorial position last year after being appointed by Governor Charlie Baker, said Murphy has distinguished herself in two years on the Council by advocating policies that get guns off the street, reduce recidivism, and promote quality of life in all of Boston’s neighborhoods. Murphy is the only At-Large candidate Murphy is supporting this year.

“Erin has supported policies and programs that help keep families in Boston safer,” said Hayden. “She voted in favor of funding for the Boston Regional Intelligence Center to target gang violence and fund counterrorism efforts. She’s been a standout leader on the Mass and Cass issue, pushing initiatives to clean up that neighborhood while showing compassion for those dealing with addiction and mental health. And she’s supported law enforcement. She deserves a second term, and the people of Boston deserve an At-Large Councilor like Erin.”

Tompkins, who won election as Suffolk County Sheriff in 2014 after appointment by Governor Deval Patrick the year prior, praised Murphy’s work as Chair of the Council Committee on Public Health, Homelessness, and Recovery, particularly in the field of substance abuse and recovery. Tompkins, who serves as Chair of the Roxbury Community College Board of Trustees, was re-elected in 2016 and 2022.

“Overseeing the Suffolk County corrections system, I have a close-up view of the types of policies and advocacy that are necessary for rehabilitation and returning inmates to society productively, and Erin has taken the right positions to not just discourage individuals from taking actions that would land them in the system, but on helping them find the right course if they do get there,” said Tompkins. “She’s a thoughtful, compassionate leader and a true representative of all our neighborhoods.”

Murphy said she was honored by the announcements by both Hayden and Tompkins, which join the formal support of Boston’s four major first responder unions in endorsing her record: Boston Firefighters Local 718, the Boston Police Patrolman’s Association, the Boston Police Superior Officers Federation, and the EMS Division of the Boston Police Patrolman’s Association.

“District Attorney Hayden and Sheriff Tompkins know what it’s like to be responsible for keeping our city safe during a dangerous and complex time, and their endorsements of my work on those issues send a clear signal,” Murphy said. “We’re all committed to making our streets safer so Boston families can have peace of mind, and I’m proud to have the support of our top public safety and criminal justice leaders.”

Boston City Councilor At-Large Erin Murphy was first elected in 2021, after more than 20 years as a Boston Public Schools teacher. A lifelong Dorchester resident, she attended BPS, worked her way through the University of Massachusetts Boston and her Master’s degree from Fitchburg State University, while raising her three children in the city as a single mom.

Since taking citywide office, Murphy has delivered on her promise to be the “go-to call at City Hall” for constituents in every neighborhood, delivering on a broad range of her priorities, including education, senior services, substance abuse and recovery, job growth, safer streets, veterans’ priorities, and increased opportunities for small businesses and people of color. Murphy has been working hard to earn votes in every neighborhood in advance of the November 7th City Council election.
